Over three centuries of viticulture and wine production

The wine production at the Clos des Cordeliers has started for more than three centuries.

17th and 18th century : References to the cultivation of vines at the domain date back to 1630. Then, it was the Cordeliers de Saumur, the Franciscan monks that acquired the estate in 1696, who gave to the place its name and fame. Until the French Revolution, they established the 'clos' - the walls surrounded vineyard - and produced wine that became coveted troughout the region.

19th century : Due to the confiscation of religious communities' property by the state, the domain was bought by the family of Madame AMOUROUX, wealthy owners of Bordeaux vineyards. Already cited among the most renowned red wines of the times, le Clos des Cordeliers is one of very few Loire red wines to be included in the 1830's first ever edition of 'Classification des Vins du Monde' (A. Julien).

Champigny, near Saumur, produce robust, hearty and tasty wines, especially those of the Clos des Cordeliers.

20th and 21th century : In 1932, the vineyard is bought by the RATRON family, who, through 4 generations, expands and modernises the property. They constantly perpetuated the domain's reputation by producing the Saumur-Champigny AOC, one of the Loire Valley most prestigious red wine appellations.

Sébastien has succeded to his father Bernard and his uncle Michel, the RATRON's brothers.
Today, Marie-Françoise RATRON continues the long passion and rigour, true to the terroir, the history and the reputation of the Clos des Cordeliers.
